What constitutes a good photograph? Definitions abound,
but the simplest I can come up with is this: A photograph is good
when when one never tires of looking at it. Just as a good
symphony will reveal something new even at the 100th listening, a good
photograph will always surprise on careful observation. It offers
something unique to each viewer. But it also reveals something —
a lot, really, to anyone who cares to dig — about the photographer. On
this
site you will find images that, for one reason or another, I felt
compelled
to shoot and then print. It would be presumptuous to say they are
good. I hope at least that they come across as interesting.
The images in my galleries are not digital photographs; they
have been scanned (with varying degrees of success, alas) from
traditional hand-made prints. I'm happy to discuss technical
details (such as I may remember, or have noted, them) with anyone who
may be interested. Please note: Reproduction of images on this site
in any form whatsoever is prohibited without my express written consent.
(But if
any image so grabs you that you'd like to purchase a custom print,
e-mail
me and we'll discuss.)
(A number of the images here were taken on the Greek island
of Skopelos, and from a safari in Tanzania. Click to see what I
have written about these places.)
